Background

This page demonstrates several UI tools available for filtering a search results set in the Viper travel search and booking application.

At this point in the process, the agent has already selected a vacation destination and travel dates, and searched for hotel availability.

The packaging system has returned a list of 27 matching hotels.

The agent controls the level of detail displayed and filters the results by:

• Price
• Text
• Package Type (e.g., meal inclusion, free nights)
• Room Type

Filter sets for Package and Room Type are dynamically generated based on the results returned from the server.

• Viper was designed for travel agents and presumes travel domain knowledge that end consumers may not possess.
• Viper was developed for in-house use and is not required to conform to accessibility standards. Controls such as the slider would require keyboard equivalents for end consumer use.
• A positioning error affecting the slider control in the IE7 beta has been identified, but not yet addressed.
• In the current Viper implementation, re-sorting the results requires a server round-trip. This has been identified as a candidate for Ajax enhancement. The sort algorithm is dependent on business logic -- it allows weighting the sort, e.g., for special promotions, so we don't do it on the client.
